The Prairie Cottage Sheringham » Sheringham

Sheringham Art TrailUpper Sheringham has been a farming community for around 2,000 years and is mentioned in The Domesday Book (1086). At that time Lower Sheringham was little more than a small fisherman’s community. In the early 1700s each village had a population of around 100 but gradually the fishing industry began to thrive.

Over the years the town has expanded to its present size to give us the bustling seaside community we see today. A few boats still operate, bringing in a daily catch for the local businesses.

There is plenty to do within a short walking distance of The Prairie and unlike some seaside resorts Sheringham is open for business all year round.

The town motto is “Mare Ditat Pinusque Decorat“, which translates from Latin to “The sea enriches and the pine adorns”. I could not think of a more apt motto for Sheringham.

The sea front lined with picture postcard beach huts, the High Street with it’s traditional shop fronts and the North Norfolk Railway all add to the charm of Sheringham and you are only a short journey away from more in one of England’s most beautiful counties.
