Sheringham Viking Festival 2018

You may be surprised to hear that Sheringham has a rich historical link to Vikings. The town’s name is of Scandinavian origin and translates to ‘The Ham of Scira’s People’, where a ham is a town, as in hamlet.

It is thought that Scira may have been a Viking warrior who was given the land as a reward for his victories in battle.

The Vikings settled in Sheringham around 900AD. 1300 years later, the fearless Vikings are back to reclaim the town with the annual Viking Festival. This is a hugely successful event in Sheringham’s calendar, taking place during February Half-Term week (10th-17th February 2018) with events around the town culminating in a parade down the high street and the burning of a Viking Longboat on the beach, lit by an archer with flaming arrows.
